1 John 5:11-12 “And this is testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.”        Extra Reading: 1 John 5:1-21

Too many people in this world choose to live their lives outside of God. Too many influences in our lifetime scream for our attention. It is up to you to choose which ones affect your life and your future. The Bible is very clear about which choice we should make, and it is that of eternal life with God. God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son (John 1:4). God gave His Son Jesus, that whoever believes in Him may have eternal life (John 3:16). Without faith in Christ, there can be no eternal life (see John 3:36). Through faith we have the Son and, together with Him, eternal life (1 John 5:12). Now, in this letter, John is writing to believers in order that their faith might become even more strong and certain, in order that they might know that they have eternal life. And that is being spiritually alive. A sick person receives a renewed life after recovering from illness. A person receives new life after receiving Jesus Christ as his/her Lord and Saviour. The reason why so many people walk in this world spiritually dead is that they resist making that key shift in their lives. They have not really grasped the true purpose of life. The true purpose of life is to serve God. Joshua understood this purpose when he confronted his fellow Israelites by saying, “And if it is evil I your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15 ESV).

The purpose of life is to do the Father’s will (John 4:34). To be spiritually alive is to attain Christlikeness. Paul in Philippians 3:13-14 states, “Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it in my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus” ESV Bible. I have heard one person in bus say, “This is my life. I live it the way I want. Nobody can tell me what to do.” I really got worried about that statement when I compared it with what Paul have just said. If a person chooses to live in his own way, then he should not be surprised to find himself in a dead end one day. In this world there are too many forces seeking to pull us in the wrong direction. We have to be careful how we conduct our lives. Make a choice to lead a healthy spiritual life today. Never postpone this moment and say that there is still plenty time to make that decision. Even though people live longer in modern times, we are not guaranteed that we shall be alive tomorrow. Live a life that is pleasing to God today. That is healthy spiritual life. The Psalmist in Psalm 37:27 says, “Depart from evil, and do good; and dwell forever more.” KJV Bible. It is such a wonderful thing to live a healthy, active spiritual life that honours God, and does not leave us with a guilty conscience. May God help us to lead spiritually active lives.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, we confess our spiritual death, and seek your forgiveness, in Your name we pray, Amen.
