Christ’s Second Coming

Matthew 25:31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory.”

Extra Reading: Matthew 25:1-30.

Christ’s first coming was in humiliation but the Second Coming will be glorious. To be ready for Christ’s coming means living in two worlds: the first is the world of time and space where God’s people care for God’s creation; the other, a world made new at Jesus’ coming for which the preparation includes prayer, worship, and Bible study. How can we be ready for Christ’s return? People who are ready are not hypocritical, but sincere (Luke 12:1); not fearful, but ready to witness (Luke 12:4-9); not worried, but trusting (Luke 12:25-26), not greedy but generous (Luke 12:33-34); not lazy, but diligent (Luke 12:37). Make sure your life is Christ’s so that when He comes, you will be ready to greet Him joyfully. I know that there are other people who hold strongly to other views about the Second Coming of Christ, like post millennials, A-millennials, and pre-millennials. The most important thing is to agree with the Word that He is definitely coming for the second time. Christ’s first coming was prophesied and those prophecies came to pass literally.

This gives us great confidence that the prophecies of the Second Coming will also be fulfilled literally and not in a figurative or spiritual sense. It was foretold by the prophets. Daniel 7:13 states, “In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like the son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence.” It was foretold by Jesus himself (Matthew 25:31). It was foretold by Paul. 1 Timothy 6:14 states, “…to keep this command without spot or blame until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ.” It was foretold by angels (Acts 1:10, 11) when the Saviour ascended from the earth. None of these prophecies were fulfilled at His first coming. The time of His coming is a secret that only the Lord knows (Matthew 24:36). Jesus Christ as man did not know that date but Jesus Christ as God is omniscient and certainly knows the exact moment when it will occur. We can advance or slow down His coming by the speed at which we take the Gospel to every tribe (Matthew 24:14).

Prayer: O Lord, make us to work at witnessing to every living person until you come. In Jesus Christ’s name we pray, Amen.
