Jesus, the bread of life
John 6:35 “Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.”
Extra Reading: John 6:25-35
Jesus performed a miracle when he multiplied the loaves of bread and the fish to feed more than five thousand people. After that they wanted to crown him king, because they wanted to be ruled by a person who could feed them in such a wonderful way. They wanted to follow Jesus in order to satisfy their physical needs. But their physical needs were not their deepest needs. Their spiritual needs were much more devastating than their physical needs, because whereas the body is mortal, the soul is immortal. Jesus, having become a human being, also got hungry, so he could sympathize with hungry people. And he gave them food to eat. But he was much more concerned about their spiritual needs than about their physical needs. So he proclaimed: “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never be hungry, he who believes in me will never be thirsty.” (John 6:35).
There is only one way “to eat the Bread who came from heaven”, and that is to accept in faith Jesus Christ as your personal Saviour and to devote your whole life to Him. It is only the person who is really concerned about his spiritual hunger and thirst and about his relationship with God and his eternal destination, who will come to Jesus and find the bread of life in Him. Jesus said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:3). People who follow Jesus only because they want to benefit physically and materially, will not endure. When the test comes, they will also say: “This teaching is too hard, who can listen to it?” They will turn back and will not go with him any more (John 6:60, 66). We need to pay close attention to what God’s Word teaches us. We should not try to hide behind any excuse. Hell is no joke. If we ignore the bread of life, we should then prepare to face the consequences of sin.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you for coming to this world as the Bread of life and that you were broken on the cross to satisfy our spiritual hunger and thirst. Thank you that you can satisfy our deepest spiritual needs. Make me your genuine follower, never to turn back again. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen!
