The power of silence

Psalm 46:10 “Be still and know that I am God”

Extra Reading: Psalm 46:1-11

When I grew up, I used to hear grown up people speak of “silence is golden”. Later I discovered that there is also a film made from Hollywood sharing the same name. I strongly believe that we hear God very clearly when we become silent before him in prayer. But some people find silence a bit complex and come in layers. First, self-consciousness, screwing up eyes and embarrassment, then-trivia and anxieties: Have I left my car with lights on? Did I pay the telephone bill? then-Embarrassment: Remembering failures, economic, personal and social, then-Anger and nastiness, difficult to admit what I am, then-Self-pity-sometimes tears, then-Exhaustion and emptiness…then-A bird sings, then-Peacefulness. You open your eyes. Everything seems just right as it is. Occasionally you plug into joy. One preacher once said, “The voice of God is a friendly voice. No one needs fear to listen to it unless he has already made up his mind to resist it” I totally agree with what he said. Why should a person be afraid to listen to the voice of God? Heaven is a friendly place. Whoever will listen will hear the speaking heaven. This is definitely not the hour when people take kindly to an exhortation to listen, for listening is not today a part of popular religion.

We are at the opposite angle of the pole from there. Religion has accepted the monstrous heresy that noise, size, activity and bluster make a man dear to God. We need to know that our strength and safety lie not in noise but in silence. Silence heals and it is pleasing to God. It is by silence that the saints grew. It was because of silence that the power of God dwelt in them; because of silence that the mysteries of God were known to them. I believe that God delivers His best thoughts to us in silence. Please receive the gift of silence from God today. Let’s thank God for silence, wherein our souls may rest, and quietly grow, and expand upward to God. May God help us to get into the discipline of silence. God has some noisy children, but he appreciates it when we approach him in silence sometime.

Prayer: O God, sorry for bombarding you with our noise. Help us to approach you in silence. In Jesus Christ’s name, Amen!
