The Purpose of God Isaiah 46:10-11 “I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times what is still to come. I say: My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please. From the east I summon a bird of prey; from a far-off land, a man to fulfill my purpose. What I have said, that I will bring about; what I have planned, that will I do.” NIV Bible Extra Reading: Isaiah 46:1-13.
God has a plan for His creation which He will certainly accomplish. It is carried out through the control of circumstances and His choice and use of people, and above all in the life, death, resurrection and second coming of Jesus Christ. Isaiah 46:10-11 “I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say: My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please. From the east I summon a bird of prey; from afar-off land, a man to fulfill my purpose. What I have said, that I will bring about; what I have planned, that I will do.” It was the time when Israel was tempted to waver between the Lord God and pagan gods. Isaiah affirms the sole lordship of God. God is unique in His knowledge and in His control of the future. His consistent purpose is to carry out what He has planned. When we are tempted to pursue anything that promises pleasure, comfort, peace, or security apart from God, we must remember our commitment to God. Make no mistake, my friend, and think that God does not mean what He says. He will definitely accomplish His purposes in this world, either during our lifetime or long after we have gone to be with Him in heaven. Just meditate on what the psalmist says in Psalm 135:6 “The Lord does whatever pleases Him, in the heavens and on the earth, in the seas and all their depths.” He is at work in the heavens and on earth. Proverbs 16:4 states “The Lord works out everything for His own ends-even the wicked for a day of disaster.” As the Sovereign God of the cosmos, He knows the outcome before the beginning.
Ecclesiastes 3:14 states “I know that everything God does will endure for ever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it. God does it so that men will revere Him.” What is the purpose of life? It is that we should revere the all-powerful God. To revere God means to respect and stand in awe of Him because of who He is. Purpose in life starts with whom we know, not what we know or how good we are. It is impossible to fulfill your God-give purpose unless you revere God and give Him first place in your life. The writer of the Book of Isaiah cautions us. He states in Isaiah 14:24, 26-27 “The Lord Almighty has sworn, “Surely, as I have planned, so it will be, and as I have purposed, so it will stand. This is the plan determined for the whole world; this is the hand stretched out over all nations. For the Lord Almighty has purposed, and who can thwart Him? His hand is stretched out, and who can turn it back?” This prophecy came true as Isaiah predicted (see 2 Kings 19 and Isaiah 37:21-38). The purpose of the Lord stands forever. It cannot be changed or disturbed by human beings. The purpose of God is eternal in Jesus Christ (Ephesians 3:11). May God help us to understand His purpose in this world.
Prayer: God, our Father, help us to know your purpose about our lives and our world. We pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.
