The value of wisdom

Proverbs 4:5 “Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget my words or swerve from them.”

Extra Reading: Proverbs 4:1-13.

Many people think that to be wise one need to solve a mathematical problem on the computer, then you will be regarded as wise. Success in relationships, raising children, and spiritual maturity are dependent not on intellect, but rather on wisdom. The Bible, which devotes the whole book of Proverbs to the subject, teaches that the wisdom to master life’s challenges and to understand spiritual truth is found only in God.  Job once asked a question, “Where does wisdom come from?” He did not take it for granted that he knows. Wisdom can be acquired through diligent search and obedience to God. God knows where wisdom is to be found (Job 28:23). It takes many years to acquire wisdom (Job 32:7).

The writer of the Book of James encourages us to ask for wisdom (James 1:5). King Solomon once asked God to give him an understanding mind so that he can know the difference between right and wrong (1 Kings 3:5-14). He made wisdom and understanding the priority of his life with God. I have learned that wisdom strengthens a wise man (Ecclesiastes 7:19).  Wisdom is so important that Joseph taught to the elders of Egypt (Psalm 105:22). The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Psalm 111:10). What can man do without wisdom from God?

Prayer: Father God, without your wisdom we fail to live according to your purposes. Help us, Father, to come to you for wisdom. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
