Understanding the existence of demons-Part 1

Luke 13:32 He replied, “Go tell that fox, ‘I will drive out demons and heal people today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will reach my goal.’

Extra Reading: Luke 13:1-34

Jesus Christ drove out many demons during His earthly ministry and He delegated this authority to His disciples. Jesus understood exorcism of demons as part of his earthly ministry. He drove out demons from individuals brought to Him (Matthew 8:16). Jesus drove out demons from individuals whom He encountered (Mark 1:23-26). His desire was for every person to live freely from oppression by demons. Belief in the existence of evil spirits has prevailed among all the known peoples of the world from earliest times of which we have knowledge. These spirits are often thought to be departed ghosts which have come back to annoy living people. Those professing to see demons have seen them in human forms, as well as animal and hybrid forms of various sorts; ordinarily demons are invisible spirits. Jesus accepted without doubt belief in the existence of demons, and the Gospel of Mark tells many stories of Jesus casting out demons. Some people question whether demons and spirits exist today; I strongly believe they exist.

Scriptural testimony is clear that there was an abundance of demons at the time Jesus was here on earth. Man today boasts of an age of science and technology and dismisses the biblical claim as a mere remnant of medieval superstition or an amusing joke. New Testament writers firmly believed in demons and John in Revelation 9:20 speak of a future time (the time of the Great Tribulation) when men will continue to worship devils; many pagan peoples today are ardent spirit worshippers.  People in most African countries can testify of having seen demon possessed people and having heard the demons speak through the lips of these people. Do you still doubt their existence? Then ask any evangelist moving and ministering from village to village. At the proclamation of the name of Jesus, they disappear. Demons do not possess a Christian. The Holy Spirit who lives in us is more superior in power than these spirits from hell. Don’t worry. Stop looking for a demon from under every tree. Continue to witness to people about salvation offered by Jesus Christ.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I thank you that you are more powerful than any other spirit in this world. In Jesus’ name, I thank you, Amen.
